TECMO BOWL - The game of guts and glory! Now, strap on your helmet and go for it! Choose your team and select plays for your own game plan. From the snap, total control of every pass, block, run, and tackle is in your hands. Tecmo Bowl! Ahead of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, you'll be able to replay the original 1987 release of Tecmo Bowl when it comes out on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch tomorrow. Not to be confused with the NES version most people associate with the game, the $8 Arcade Archives rerelease that's making its way to the PlayStation Store and eShop this week features a mere two teams -- the Wildcats and Bulldogs -- and no licensed players. So, no, you can't use Bo Jackson to demolish your friends and family members.

10 different players

Some of the other notable differences between the two versions are that the arcade one features better graphics and that it allows you to switch between 10 different players instead of nine. The NES version, however, was the first console sports game to feature licensed players. In 1991, its sequel, Tecmo Super Bowl, became the first sports game licensed by both the National Football League and National Football League Players Association, allowing it to feature both real NFL teams and players. If you own a Switch, you can play the NES version of Tecmo Bowl through Nintendo's Switch Online service. It's just not gonna happen. EA has exclusive rights to the NFL and NFLPA licenses and Tecmo has the license to the original game. Hero must die. again Switch NSP

There's all sorts of logos that are way harder to replace than putting a black box over character names (to avoid the NFLPA license) like they did with NSO Tecmo Bowl, so Tecmo would have to either totally re-do a ton of the pixel art (which may not even be enough to avoid rights issues) and rename the game unless they paid out the nose. If they were gonna sell it at a full price, that'd be one thing. But, this would have to be $10-15 or no one is gonna buy it. Just not enough money to make it happen. Better off just downloading roster updates onto your emulator box of choice.Yeah, Tecmo Bowl Throwback on 360. It was ok.

Controls were kinda meh.

I'd be totally down with a new one if they made it play like the original, but just made up a bunch of new teams and characters. Hell, fill it with sound-alikes of famous characters and it would be pretty funny. "Joe Rackson is unstoppable!" "Mo Santana to Larry Lice!"I'll take this time to recommend starving football fans try out Football Heroes Turbo, especially if you can get it on a sale. The game is broken and imbalanced as all hell, but it's basically a halfway point between Tecmo Super Bowl and Mutant League Football. You can punch defenders and do some ridiculous stuff that you wouldn't in TSB, but it's not as off the wall or violent as MLF. Great time. Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Switch NSP

I did pick this up and it's kinda a bunch of fun. I haven't messed around with any settings, but from the get go it's just like if you threw 2 random teams from Tecmo Bowl into a much nicer looking game. You don't pick your plays, the computer lines your guys up automatically for you. You do pick your receiver before the play, though. You can jump in front of passes to intercept or get a better chance at a pass completion in bad coverage. It's really really hard to make long run plays (unless there's some turbo button or a more effective way to get past defenders I haven't found yet), and I don't think there's a difference between the various players other than paths and placement during plays, so that would make it more balanced of a vs experience than Tecmo Bowl.

Gameplay

I could see this being a lot of fun to boot up for 20-30 minutes to run through a game with a buddy or two and then go back to doing whatever. Absolutely worth it as a curiosity for long time NES/SNES Tecmo Bowl players, imo.Given how few options there are for sports fans on the Switch, I felt like this classic football game from the NES era would be more than welcome. It's no replacement for Madden, of course, but it's something. Definitely gonna pick this up. I hear it's pretty different from the NES version and I've never got a chance to give it a shot. Anyone know how it stacks up to the NSO version? With the NCAA officially moving forward with player licensing, we could see 2K or another company swapping the rights. The problem is that every single player in college football would have to get paid and that's not gonna happenI think it’s a cool concept and remember playing them but I just don’t get to excited. I guess I always liked games with NFLPA license. So only hope would be a madden. If you have NSO then NES Tecmo Bowl has already available. Would love Madden and have looked at Mutant Football League but so far it seems Tecmo Bowl is the best option. Yeah, Tecmo Bowl Throwback on 360. It was ok. Controls were kinda meh.
