Once you’ve named your new daughter, it’s up to you to ensure she becomes a stable adult over the course of the next 10 years. You essentially dictate every aspect of your daughter’s life. You get to set the size and cost of her meals, her pocket money, and most importantly her schedule. Each week you can decide what class, job or person she will spend each day of week investing in. This choice will decide which of her stats level up, from charisma and strength, to dance moves and language skills. If you make your daughter overdo it and she runs out of stamina however, she’ll get unwell and gain less stats from daily activities. The Administration immediately warn you about the potential punishment for raising your child incorrectly, so keeping her happy, healthy and social is key.
Balancing every aspect of your daughter’s wellbeing is pretty intense.
Work her too hard and she’ll get ill, give her tasks she dislikes and she’ll get stressed, pamper her and she’ll get spoiled. Alongside this parental balancing act, you also have to manage your budget. Classes don’t come cheap, but if you spend too much time at work you and your daughter will drift apart. Life as an unexpected single parent is tough. Once a schedule has been planned in Ciel Fledge, you’ll see a cute little chibi version of your daughter darting around the city and going to classes. As she completes her daily routine you can feed her snacks if any of her many meters start to drop low, and if you can afford them. The meat of the game is managing Ciel’s scheduled activities in your apartment while she awkwardly awaits orders. Each activity will affect her Strength, Intelligence, Charm, Imagination, or Spirituality; gaining points in those traits will award her abilities and stat boosts. Activities take up stamina, which can be recovered through resting, socialising, or eating a snack. Before choosing Ciel’s weekly activities, though, you’ll pick how much to feed her, and how to spend your own time. If you spoil her, she’ll be happy, but less disciplined; if you work overtime, she’ll lose affection, but you’ll make great cash – which is really hard to come by in this game. Clothes and snacks for Ciel are not cheap. Affection is difficult to raise as well, especially while managing her constantly-dipping stress level.

The action hasn’t even begun, but you’ll spend much of the game in these menus, planning every week of her life for ten years. It plays out automatically, with cut-scenes and battle encounters sprinkled in. (It can thankfully be sped up.) Encounters all play out similarly: Ciel has a deck of 52 coloured cards, which need to be matched up in threes. In combat, matches play out as attacks, which can be strung together for combos. Non-combat encounters (like tests, swimming laps, or doing housework) may have you string together several matches of one colour, or as many as possible in the time limit. Eventually, Ciel and her friends can also explore Earth’s surface in a field trip – a welcome distraction from the daily grind on the Ark, as this game takes well over a dozen hours to complete. Ciel ends up interacting with a lot of characters as the game goes on. As you get to know each them, new scenes will update you on how they are doing, and how Ciel feels about them in general. My personal favorites were Amira (a military officer that can also play the violin to an expert level), Zahra (one of the more humanized and interesting adults), Becky (a girl who cherishes her guns), Erkin (a pilot that becomes significant to the plot), and Eli (an enigmatic ally). Unfortunately, I feel as if these characters aren’t necessarily allowed to shine as much as they could thanks to the slow pacing.
Exchanges between characters sometimes feel a bit too sweet and straightforward,
Lacking the edge that you see in the warfare bits of the plot. There are also numerous spelling errors throughout the dialogue sequences. Unfortunately, the warfare element has its own problems. When it comes to stories, I usually prefer character material over plot, but on this occasion I felt like the plot was actually more interesting; it promised the edge and drama that was often missing from the social scenes. Unfortunately, the pacing of the game – where you play through ten years of Ciel’s life, going through pretty much every single week of every month – is so slow that it all results in frustration. This, to be fair, may be because I received the “wrong” ending, as there is a certain choice at the end which seems to lead you to one of two significantly different scenarios. The visuals are fairly basic, but serviceable — it only feels a little crude when the still character models move around during scenes. A nice touch is that the things you can buy for Ciel to wear actually show up on her character model. The music is decent enough, with some catchy piano work.The subjects Ciel pursues each week are in your hands. Scheduling activities, like gym class, philosophy, music, and what to do with free time, all while balancing it with some rest days insures that Ciel does not become overworked, or ill, as a result.
