Ikai PS5 Free Download RomslabIkai PS5 Free Download Romslab I’m surprised there aren’t more games that make full use of Japanese folklore. There’s a ripe catalogue of creepy monsters and demons, all with histories that send chills down the spine. Ghostwire: Tokyo released recently, and did a good job of using these Yokai to tell a story of a city literally gone to hell. With Ikai, there’s a much more claustrophobic tale being told, with you cautiously wandering around your shrine and the surrounding area avoiding some hideous beings in search of the truth. Evil is on your doorstep, and all you can do is run. Ikai tells the story of a woman called Naoko, a priestess who tends to the shrine as the priest is away. ROMSLAB.COM BEST SWITCH GAMES Ikai PS5 Free Download RomslabAs the spirits start to appear and wreak havoc, you must find out what’s going on without succumbing to the dark while uncovering the secrets of your past. In the early stages, I was almost put off by one moment where you’re trying to find your sister as a child. The dialogue kept repeating itself, and every time I thought I’d found her, she ran off. It was frustrating, but I persevered. Ikai started to unravel in a much more interesting way, but the dialogue was repetitive at certain points throughout.Admittedly, horror experiences aren’t my forte. I never straight-up avoid the genre, but it’s rarely one I find myself eager for. Regardless, out of a sense of passing curiosity, I decided to dive into Ikai, a first-person horror title by publisher PM Studios honing in on Japanese folklore.
Ikai: No friendly ghosts in sight
While it may not be a particularly impressive venture for dedicated horror game fans, it can be a thrilling time for open-minded genre newcomers. Ikai is so close to being something special. The premise of the game is strong, it has the occasional moment of inspired horror design, and you can tell that the developers entered into this with some genuine intent and vision. Unfortunately, at other times it comes across as amateur and immature, and every time that happens it undermines all the good work that the rest of the game does. In Ikai, you play as Naoko, a young shrine maiden who finds herself largely alone as her shrine is beset by the monstrous yokai spirits of Japanese mythology and lore. That premise alone had me very excited. STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic Switch NSP Ikai PS5 Free Download RomslabI’ll play just about anything that taps into the aesthetics and storytelling tradition of these monsters. I’ve been to more than a few gallery exhibitions themed around the Hyakki Yagyō – the night parade of 100 demons – in which, as the legend goes, an entire parade of these monstrous misfits marches through town (and woe be to anyone that runs into them). I’ve played plenty of games that lean into the mythology, including the recent GetsuFumaDen, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Nioh and its sequel. Unfortunately, Ikai doesn’t really do this rich tradition justice. There are yokai, they do have stories, and you do need to defeat them (mostly by sealing them, as Naoko hasn’t got any weapons beyond her spiritual powers), but where another Japanese horror game that leans heavily into the Japanese-ness of it.
Fear and fascination
Project Zero: Maiden of Blackwater – works really hard to recreate the mythology, pathos and ethos of the yurei mythology, to Ikai the yokai are just tools of convenience, in what is otherwise meant to be a creepy and intense horror experience. They could have been zombies, western demons, creatures from whatever inspires the artists of FromSoftware, or some other horror tradition. It never quite felt like the yokai of Ikai was so essential to the experience that they couldn’t be substituted. That’s strike one. When the ghouls come out and you begin to see more of what transpires, Ikai is at its best. You don’t have any weapons or means of fighting the Yokai. All you can do is run. There are moments where you can block doorways or rid the evil by drawing protective seals. STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed Switch NSP Ikai PS5 Free Download RomslabThis is done by tracing a symbol, and it’s a nice way to make use of the controller. Ikai is filled with puzzles to solve that help break up the exploration. Some of them are constructed with plenty of layers, and I was often impressed with their design. One of which involved me looking around a room in the shrine for certain symbols. I picked up every item I could to find them, but I had no idea which order they needed to be inputted into the lock that would allow me to escape into the catacombs underneath the shrine. Thankfully, Naoko gave me the idea to look for markings near the symbols that might highlight the order. While some puzzles can be tricky, there’s always a smart way to solve it.
A puzzling nightmare
The gameplay takes place in the first-person perspective, with Naoko able to walk, crouch, examine, and run. Most notably, though, she is entirely defenseless, lacking any offensive options. This seems to be a standard in most horror games, and it works reasonably well here. Naoko is essentially a normal shrine maiden, so her frailty makes complete sense, also serving to amplify the potential feeling of unease. Progression can be generally divided between two phases: stealth, and puzzle-solving. The former is basic and never really inventive, solely comprised of avoiding foes’ line of sight by hiding in applicable spots. Still, the elementary mechanics get the job done and rarely overstay their welcome, granting greater prominence to the puzzle-solving. State of Mind Switch NSP Ikai PS5 Free Download RomslabPuzzles are actually quite varied, with some requiring timed movements to avoid hazardous scenarios and others necessitating ways to open up required paths. As a beginner to these types of games, I rarely felt overwhelmed by the difficulty these tasks imposed upon me, likely meaning that genre veterans will have a straightforward time. However, regardless of the challenge, the puzzles were enjoyable to figure out. While they may occasionally be too apparent in portrayed clues, I always felt at least moderately satisfied whenever completing one. Further, for those who find themselves stumped during particular instances, Naoko will speak aloud, providing hints. Strike two is the performances, and any effort the game takes to put character into the experience.Note: This game will only run on consoles with the original firmware that are connected to the PSN online account and purchased the game from PSN.
