Take Off – The Flight Simulator Switch NSP Free Download Romslab Take Off -The Flight Simulator is another Nintendo Switch release that wings its way over from the mobile platform. To this day I have avoided the mobile platform since game design over there is just not my thing. I don’t like microtransactions or in-app purchases and often they have very little respect for a player’s time. Of course, buried in this sea of disappointment are some glowing games which have seen new life when ported over to Switch. And I for one am grateful to have experienced some of those. Last year in fact I even thought to myself that maybe I should give the mobile platform another try. But then you play games like Take Off and I think I’m probably just better off sticking to consoles and PC still. ROMSLAB.COM BEST SWITCH GAMES

To be fair this game does not feature microtransactions or in-app purchases but that’s not the only issue here. Grandad is ready to retire and he’s handing the keys to his airport over to you. You start the game by creating your pilot card which features a profile picture, your name and airport company. From there you jump into a plane for a tutorial to get to grips with the flight controls, these are presented via text boxes and showing a screen of the controls which I didn’t find very helpful. You’re taught how to take off, move the wings about and of course land. However, I found that a lot of this I had to just figure out for myself through frustrating trial and error.
A Selection of Planes
I rarely felt I had full control of the plane, with the controls often feeling fiddly. Landing, in particular, was difficult as I could rarely get down. I followed the steps, yet often made a mistake and the plane crashed leading to another tedious restart of the entire mission. I guess if I was to give some praise the game does make use of touch controls in handheld mode. You can even use a hybrid of analogue and touch if you fancy. But despite a good addition I found playing this game quite uncomfortable. From the tutorial you jump into a variety of missions. Most of these follow a pretty familiar pattern. Take off, fly through checkpoints and then land at a designated spot. Project Warlock Switch NSP

The game does throw a few curve balls now and then, like having part of the plane not working and you coping with the restricted controls. When you complete a mission you get either a bronze, silver or gold rating plus some money, experience and another in-game currency. As you level up you unlock more missions. Often the missions you unlock require you to purchase a plane you can’t afford, making unlocking the missions in the first place pointless. This here feels where the mobile to console transition was not addressed. If you played this game on mobile the game would likely encourage you to spend in-app purchases to unlock another plane quicker.
Missions
Since this is not present in the console port your only option is to grind away at the same tedious missions until you gain enough money to afford a new plane. You can also upgrade your planes and buy new skins but of course, doing this requires more money which I was often very short of. The game also features a free fly mode where you can take any of your purchased planes and just fly about at your leisure. At level ten you unlock a new mode where you run your own airline. Here you send planes to various world destinations and can opt to take off and land the plane manually or just skip that step. This seemed like an interesting management style game. But my interest in this was pretty quickly diminished when I learned you need to gain more in-game currency to even send planes out in the first place. Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha Switch NSP

Take Off is a game that doesn’t respect the player’s time at all. If playing the missions was fun I might see the appeal, but, I was honestly just bored playing this game and didn’t look forward to picking it up. Of course, after grinding away a lot of these problems I mention are alleviated but it’s whether you have the patience to get that far. The graphics are very bland. I guess the plane designs are ok. You have an assortment of various models like small bi-planes to massive passenger carriers. If you grind away enough you’ll even unlock a fighter jet. The environments in this game though are very ugly. You’ll mostly be flying over a green island with some pretty rough textures and the odd tree popping into the screen. Sometimes you’ll see the odd ugly city.
Prepare to Take Off
I guess the biggest highlight for me was when I was attempting to land in London (for the tenth time) I saw a little Big Ben poking out on the horizon, even though the poorly rendered city looked nothing like London. I know this graphical design is a pretty standard affair for the simulator genre. But it sure feels like there was an opportunity to add a unique art style, the game doesn’t really feature a soundtrack either. So maybe have your favourite podcast ready if you decide to try this.Take Off -The Flight Simulator was not for me, but I guess I want to conclude with some positives first. There are probably some gamers that will be able to look past this game’s faults and enjoy the experience for what it is. After all, there aren’t many flight simulators on Nintendo Switch. Though I would say this game sits more between arcade design and flight simulator. The game doesn’t feature any DLC and there is a decent variety of planes to fly. But despite all this, there are clearly better options if you have access to other consoles or PC. For me Take Off was not a flight worth taking.
