This game is the studio's latest bombastic offering, a game that's been available on other platforms since February of 2020, and it's one the team found to be its toughest assignment to date in terms of getting it up and running within the rather restrictive memory limitations on Switch. As it turns out, we needn't have worried at all, as Rebellion has continued its streak here with another solid port that serves up a great big bloody feast of Nazi zombie-slaying action. If you're a long-term fan of Rebellion's work, you'll know exactly what to expect here, with the game's third-person shooter action taking place across a bunch of fairly linear levels that are absolutely stuffed full of enemies to mow down in the manner of your choosing. You'll want to keep an eye on your combo-counter at all times, bumping off baddies in quick succession in order to keep your score on the up and ensuring you dispatch the dead as stylishly as possible for all manner of bonuses and multipliers.
Emotes, dances and ugly weapon skins
Higher levels unlock perks that give you some more or less useful passive bonuses, like a second chance after death (useful) or more stamina (well). There are also weapon upgrades, with our shotgun electrifying enemies or a revolver causing zombies to explode . This means that there is now more advancement and customization options than usual in the series. The perks are pretty nice, the weapon upgrades are fun. Unfortunately, the latter only work in the campaign and not in Horde mode. In addition, you gradually unlock a few emotes and dances, because apparently every shooter now needs them. There are also some really ugly weapon skins to unlock, most of which look like someone glued the guns on with a thick paintbrush and a bucket of paint. Zombie Army 4: Dead War is exactly as bloodthirsty and chaotic as we hoped and expected it would be, and its non-stop gunplay is padded out with the same sort of straightforward objectives that have become standard in the series, charging you (and up to three other players in co-op) with defending points on a map against waves of enemies, collecting parts to open doors, or assembling some bizarre piece of machinery as the undead attack from every angle.
Shocking New Campaign
There's definitely nothing surprising in how levels play out here — and Left 4 Dead this certainly ain't — but this is still, for our money, Rebellion's slickest zombie effort to date and easily one of the very best shooters they've created so far. Did you catch that just a couple of weeks ago, Valve came out and said that in no uncertain terms that there will absolutely not be a Left 4 Dead 3 anytime soon? Well, what’s terrible news for many is awesome for Zombie Army 4: Dead War, which couldn’t have hoped for better timing. It’s here to follow in those four-player co-op footsteps – except its zombies are also Nazis, and sometimes when you kill them you get a super-gross slow-mo kill. It definitely scratches the itch, though the handful of new ideas it injects don’t really reinvigorate the genre that Bill, Coach, Zoey, and Francis built.Shmup Collection Switch NSP Zombie Army 4 Dead War Switch NSP Free Download RomslabIt may feel overall familiar, but Zombie Army 4 does manage to separate itself from the already sizable horde of cooperative zombie shooters in a few enjoyable ways. For starters, the story is delightfully absurd, with occult forces bringing the Nazi army back from the dead, seemingly from the literal bowels of Hell. Its roughly eight-hour campaign ends with a ridiculous and surprising final confrontation that is worth seeing unspoiled. A simplified Horde mode exists as well, if you just want to stick to one location and see how many waves you can take on while experimenting with different weapons. I prefer the variety and forward momentum of playing the full campaign, but Horde offers plenty of opportunity for intense shootouts and last-second victories.
Bigger, Badder Horde Mode
Through an X-Ray camera, we'll see our projectile penetrating the enemy's bodies, shredding bones and organs there - just like in Sniper Elite from the same developer. If you find this too detailed, you can also disable this feature. There are also four equally powerful secondary weapons (two shotguns, an MP44 and a tommy gun) and three hand guns as an iron reserve for emergencies. A fourth sniper rifle and an LMG as a secondary weapon are behind a paywall - each available for a handful of euros extra or in one of the premium editions of the game. However, these are not the only payment barriers in this full-price game. Why would I take two steps backward and start using a machine gun when my shotgun electrocutes zombies? Because there aren’t any classes, I didn’t feel a reason to return to square one and change things up. It’s a nice touch, though, that when you die you turn into a zombie and watch, with no control, as your character ambles into the crowd and becomes another obstacle for your friends to overcome.
