The last time I played it, which was back in June of 2021, the game was still in its pre-release stages, and I had been given the opportunity to sit down with a preview build. To make a long story short, I loved it. Quite literally, my least favorite thing about the game about the game at that point was the fact that it wasn’t a finished product. It was finally time to play Lost Epic in full, and I couldn’t wait. To put it bluntly, Lost Epic didn’t turn out exactly how I thought it would. I quickly came to realize that there were a lot of things that I had initially overlooked during my 2021 preview given the game’s incomplete state. Whenever I ran into something that seemed off, I thought to myself “meh, I’m sure it’ll be fixed.” A lot of those oddities never really got fixed, though. Did it result in the game being bad? Let loose in a mysterious world, you’ll find yourself primarily working with witches. They’ve tasked you with taking down six gods in an effort to save the world and build it anew, and while you might be a bit dubious of them, you’ll push on regardless. What follows is a 2D side-scrolling adventure with both Soulslike and Metroidvania elements. Early on in the game, for example, you’ll find your progress blocked by some clearly damaged yet still rather sturdy walls. But take down a specific powerful foe and you’ll find that you now have the ability top break down those walls with a new charged attack.
LOST EPIC can have a co-op mode that allows players to team up with friends and tackle challenges together.
When it comes to the Soulslike elements, not only do you get taken back to the last safe area you visited upon death, but any Anima you were carrying gets left behind. If you can’t make it back to your place of death to reclaim it, it’s gone for good, and it’s anima you use to not only level yourself up, but also upgrade your gear and craft items. As well as materials, of course. In Lost Epic, the original Elder God left the world during a time of war, and in their place, 6 New Gods have set up shop. Dividing the world into 6 separate domains, you play as a knight tasked by a clan of witches to defeat these New Gods and return the land to its former glory. The central quest is blunted by it being kind of unclear what it is about the New Gods that is so bad that they warrant slaughtering en masse. You don’t see what the world was like before the New Gods entered the picture to give a sense of what you’re fighting for. What’s more, the environments mostly look picturesque and beautiful, which doesn’t suggest that the New Gods are necessarily doing a bad job of running things. The prologue advises that you are representing a separate group of people called the Perished whom the New Gods have abandoned and who live in the wasteland between the New Gods’ domains; despite this, you travel between the domains pretty frequently and there’s never anyone there.
Players can obtain and upgrade their weapons and equipment, allowing them to take on tougher enemies and progress through the game's challenges.
Although most Soulslike games tend to keep their narrative in the background, the central quest in Lost Epic really lacked a sense of stakes and what the end goal is for the protagonist. Today it is very common to see formulas that are born in one format to make the leap to another, for example, from 3D to 2D. This is the case of the Dark Souls series, whose action game formula with RPG elements and high difficulty has already been taken to games like Salt and Sanctuary, a 2D game. Lost Epic is a 2D action role-playing game with an anime-like art style. As already mentioned, it has a fantasy-themed premise, elements of the Soulslike sub-genre, and of course, Metroidvania-style exploration. Lost Epic seems good for a while. Great, even. You move from area to area, completing side-quests and challenges as you go, all the while keeping in mind your goal: locating the god of the region, handily marked on your map with a gold pulsating circle, and giving them a good thrashing. But after spending a handful of hours or so with the game, your interest may start to wane. And there are many reasons for it.
