Walking through the game’s caves too often feels like the equivalent of entering a deceptively quiet room in a shooter where you can’t help but notice all the suspicious-looking scenery. As in so many 3D platformers, you begin to view the environment as a tool for your own progress, eyes searching for some arrangement of walls and outcroppings broken up over sufficiently jumpable distances. Even the creatures meant to suggest the life of the island function more like collectibles rewarded for navigating some challenging terrain.

A beautiful and varied cave system filled with all manner of large and surprising creatures.

Sephonie’s most evocative sequences actually lean into the genre’s artifice, as certain caves take on the warped form of human surroundings. Drawing from the researchers’ minds, the island twists things like a mall, a Japanese cityscape, and a cornfield-laden stretch of the Midwestern United States into gravity-defying gauntlets. Filled with half-remembered dialogue and sparsely detailed character models, these sequences evoke a world we recognize, and our imagination fills in the rest. The ordinary cave networks, though, don’t have the same luxury. LIT: Bend the Light Switch NSP

With their floating flowers and dash-recharging fungi, they only ever feel like video game levels, even though they’re meant to be the more naturalistic environments. Starting with the positives, the story is a fascinating one that unfolds a slow burn over time. You play as three research scientists who shipwreck on the island of Sephonie. The scientists planned to reach there, just not shipwreck. They are visiting the island because it has a unique biodiversity and they want to connect with it using a link system that merges thoughts, emotions, memories and consciousness together.

A deep, emotional story about the close bonds of a trio, the priorities of nations, and the delicate connection of humans and nature.

The idea being, if we all know more about each other, we could perhaps build a better understanding of each other. Sephonie itself has a consciousness though and so it begins to manipulate the scientists own minds in a way that builds new levels out of memory fragments for them to traverse as they link up with more creatures and fauna to better understand the island. It is a fascinating story, that asks some deep questions in a poetic and sympathetic way. It is easily the strongest element of the game although gamers will get most out of it if they are thinkers and ponderers themselves. Live by the Sword: Tactics Switch

In order to traverse the island, its caves and forests and the memory levels it creates, your three scientists (all interchangeable as they have the same athletic skill set) will parkour around the island like a 3D platformer. Here is where some extreme marmite level design and control set up comes into play and most of my frustrations with Sephonie comes from these areas. Your character can quite fluidly run, jump, double jump, wall run, hang glide, bounce pad, lasso and sprint around Sephonie as new abilities are unlocked. The same caves you’ll revisit time and again but with new skills comes new areas to traverse and if you can see a ledge somewhere, chances are you can chain up all those moves to get there.

A screenshot mode that lets you pose the characters and creatures you meet in the game, and then take fun photos!

The graphics are early 2000-05 era blocky abstractions of walls and the dark cave style doesn’t let the stylistic choice shine as nicely as it does outside and that hides some of the retro charm. That retro charm seeps out in the control and camera issues though. And yet, Sephonie seems not to trust even its more arresting, abstract imagery to speak to its concerns, as it expands on every nuance through gobs of explanatory text. Throughout, we hear the characters and the anthropomorphized representation of the island, even the inner thoughts of various creatures. Logistics Simulator Switch NSP

Occasionally, Sephonie marries images and text to poetic effect, as in one striking sequence that traces all the different memories of places, people, and situations that stem from the simple act of eating fish. Mostly, though, the researchers go on tangents ranging from favorite foods to Taiwanese identity to biological weaponry, many of them ambitious in their themes but mind-numbing in their length and their frequency. Sephonie’s thematic scope is admirably wide-ranging, but its wordiness only crowds a game whose mechanics are tenuously connected. For a game that concerns the interconnectedness of all things, it’s unfortunate how awkwardly some of its pieces are glued together.
